Psalm 51:17 "The sacrifice you want is a broken spirit. A broken and repentant heart, O god, you will not despise." How blessed we are to serve such a forgiving and loving God who gives us a teachable spirit. Whole Chapter/Psalm 51.
In the breasts of our pint-sized examples beats brokenness and repentance. Who hasn't witnessed this when a child has been disobedient and caught with their "hand in the cookie jar" if you will? The child caught with a bat that hit a treasured vase and sent it careening to the floor in many shattered pieces for example. What comes next, is usually the picture of one's little child standing in front of them; tear soaked face, trying to say I'm sorry through the weeping, with arms stretched out seeking forgiveness and a loving embrace.
Often times through our children's weeping apologies and tears; we see the indicators of their remorse, and a person who is truly sorry. I don't know what parent can withhold that forgiving, loving and accepting (merciful) embrace to a child (person) so broken as this.
How often are we that child? Thankfully God isn't in the business of non-forgiveness. He doesn't grow distant with each disappointment or broken vase we throw at Him or on the floor. He doesn't push (us) His children away as we humbly own up to our sin, and cast it all on His mercy. He is loving and merciful, ever-steady and unwavering despite our wavering circumstances.
Application: Let us come to Jesus with a heart of repentance, seeking His wisdom and guidance for our daily assurance. Let's ask Him to get us back in line with His plans for us, which are to prosper us and not to harm us. Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." Trust and follow Him. Again, trust.
Prayer: Dear God, your love is amazing and your acceptance of us, your children. Thank you. Cleanse our hearts and search them, that they may be right with you and teachable. Bless our children with a heart of obedience, joy and strength in you Oh Lord. Let us come to you as little children, and help us learn from our innocent babies. Let us be sorrowful for the things that break your heart. Help us to see our children through your eyes, to appreciate, love and accept them as you do. Let us extend love, mercy and forgiveness to them always, as your example. Please give us a deeper desire to please you and love you, to spend time with you; in your Word and prayer. Let us trust you with the plans that you have for us, each one.
